Umpire Opportunities

The SVBSA employs youth and adult umpires for their in-house baseball programs in Mustang and Bronco leagues.  In order to be eligible to umpire, a youth must be old enough to be eligible to play Pony League in baseball or Major Slow in softball.  Initially youth umpires are assigned to umpire bases in the Mustang League, but as their experience continues to grow, they begin to take on plate responsibilities and move onto umpire Bronco 11 games.

Older baseball leagues (Pony, Colt, etc.) are umpired by an outside umpire chapter comprised mostly of adults.  The SVBSA umpire program does not participate in these age groups.  All softball games are umpired by an outside umpire association.  The SVBSA umpire program does not participate in softball umpiring.

Umpire Clinics

All umpires are required to attend an annual umpire clinic in order to be eligible to be scheduled to umpire Mustang and Bronco baseball games.

All managers of Mustang and Bronco baseball, especially those new to managing Mustang or Bronco teams, are encouraged to attend one of the umpire clinics to learn the rules of the game as well as understand what is expected of the umpires and the managers who are teaming up to teach the players how to play baseball.

About the Clinics

The clinics are two and a half hours of instruction on umpiring a baseball game. Topics covered include:

  • Role of the umpire, the manager and the parents in youth baseball
  • Rules of baseball, PONY rules of baseball and SVBSA changes
  • Responsibilities and behavior of an umpire
  • Mechanics of umpiring a game

You must bring the following things to the clinic. No copies will be provided at the training:

  • A signed SVBSA Waiver Form that permits you to umpire in SVBSA.
  • A copy of the SVBSA Umpire Clinic Handout.  This covers the rules of baseball and is used during the training session.
  • A copy of the SVBSA Umpire Positioning Document.  This covers where umpires need to stand on the field during a game based on age group and game scenario and is used during the training session.
  • A copy of the SVBSA Umpire Manual.  This covers the umpire process (game scheduling, payment, interacting with managers, etc.) and is used during the training session.
